For Rich Roll, being uniquely “Rich” meant feeling out of place. This led him down a road of drug and alcohol abuse and into the rat-race of entertainment law. In his early thirties, Rich decided he needed to change. He quit his job, stopped using and even committed himself to a year of celibacy. He began to rediscover what it meant to be uniquely him. On this episode of On Purpose, Best Selling Author and Ultra-Athlete Rich Roll and Jay talk about navigating self destructive practices, gaining wisdom from those closest to you, and pursuing work and activities that make you feel the most uniquely you. This is the story of a lifelong seeker. It’s about organizing your life around spiritual principles. Breaking the addiction to external validation. And always having the courage to fail. Meet Blake Mycoskie. Quite the change maker, Blake is most famously known as the founder of the wildly successful shoe company TOMS. He also pioneered the ‘One for One’ business model, donating a pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair sold. In turn, he sparked a generation of conscious consumers — and rebranded corporate responsibility as not only cool, but de rigueur. But Blake’s story neither begins nor ends with TOMS. A natural-born entrepreneur, Blake started 5 other businesses before TOMS. And he’s since moved on from his shoe empire to launch Madefor — a ten-month program that applies key principles of modern neuroscience, psychology, and physiology to make your brain and …

When I first got interested in meditation, all the talk of the Buddha that I encountered in the various books I was reading and lectures I was attending seemed like more of a bug than a feature. I was looking for science-backed stress relief, not religion. But the more I learned, the more interested I became in the Buddha. He was, after all, not a god or a prophet. He was, based on the available evidence, a mortal man who made no claims about the creation of the universe. In fact, to the extent that he did make metaphysical claims, he explicitly told people: don’t believe anything because I tell you. Meanwhile, he laid out a set of meditation instructions and an approach to the human situation that, in my experience, are extraordinarily practical and valuable. And yet, many of today’s meditators don’t know much …
